The Best Australian Football Teams

Fans of Australian football are passionate about the sport and many flock eagerly to support their favourite teams. The premiership season of 23 rounds is hotly contested every year, between March and September. But who are considered the best Australian football teams? Is your club on this list?

Greater Western Sydney

This professional Australian rules club is also known as the GWS Giants, and are based in the Sydney Olympic Park. They participated in their first Grand Final in September 2019, where unfortunately they were beaten by Richmond.

Brisbane Lions

The Lions are one of the most successful clubs, having appeared in four Grand Finals, and winning three premierships. They are based at Brisbane Cricket Ground and were formed in 1996. Their outstanding team strip is coloured maroon, blue and gold.

Gold Coast

The Gold Coast Football Club is also known as the Suns. They have been playing in the Australian League since 2011. They have gone from strength to strength and even have their own team song ‘Suns of the Gold Coast Sky.’ They have played in other Australian football leagues and competitions such as the TAC Cup.

North Melbourne

This popular team, nicknamed the Kangaroos, is one of the oldest in Australian rules football, having been founded in 1869. They are still based at their traditional home ground, the Arden Street Oval.

Port Adelaide

Since this club was initially founded in 1870, they have won 36 premiership titles, which astonishingly include six in a row. Their team song is ‘Never Tear Us Apart,’ made famous by the Australian band INXS.

Of course, this is only our opinion of the best Australian football teams. There are undoubtedly plenty of others who may deserve a place on the list. These include St Kilda, West Coast, Western Bulldogs, Carlton and Collingwood.
